Yoshimura Suzuki?s Aaron Yates took advantage of the misfortune of teammate Mat Mladin to win his second AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship race of the year, this one coming on a cloudy afternoon at Brainerd International Raceway.
"It's really a good feeling getting up there and winning," Yates said.
Mladin and Yates had swapped the lead back and forth, Mladin mostly in front. Yates had just moved back out front when Mladin?s rear tire came apart, forcing him to pit for a new tire.
"I got by him and figured he would come back by me and we went through some lappers and I looked back and didn't see him," Yates said.
From then on, Yates quickly pulled away, speeding to a 2.714 margin of victory over American Honda?s Miguel DuHamel, the earlier Supersport winner just 0.126 seconds in front of Erion Honda?s Kurtis Roberts after passing him on the final lap. Mladin re-joined the race to finish seventh.
"Feel bad about squeezing him out a little bit out there," DuHamel said of his last lap pass of Roberts.
Roberts said, "You have to finish to be able to win the thing and I didn't want to go out and use the tire up straight away."
Kawasaki?s Eric Bostrom managed to maintain the championship lead despite finishing fourth. Eric had dropped back to fifth, behind his brother Ben, when Ben had to pit to change a tire on the 16th lap. Eric maintained his spot to the end.
With seven races remaining, Eric Bostrom leads Mladin 321 to 318, with Yates moving up to third with 313.
Behind Eric Bostrom came Ducati Austin?s Giovanni Bussei, the Italian replacement for Anthony Gobert in his first AMA race.
Attack Suzuki?s Jason Pridmore was next, about 12 seconds back and 16 up on Mladin.
The battle for eighth went to Corona Extra EBSCO Media Suzuki?s Jordan Szoke, who?d been in with three other privateers for the duration. Millennium Kaufmann Suzuki?s Shawn Higbee was ninth after pulling away from Hooters Suzuki?s Vincent Haskovec and Prieto Racing?s Michael Barnes.
Ben Bostrom came home 12th.
